the centre aquatique nungesser is a massive, ultra-modern wellness and sports complex located right in the heart of valenciennes, sitting adjacent to the stade du hainaut. opened in early 2020 and designed by the famous architect-oceanographer jacques rougerie, it completely reimagines the traditional public swimming pool by functioning as a high-end multi-sport resort.

the facility is cleanly divided into separate specialized spaces, allowing professional swimmers, families, and wellness seekers to mix comfortably.

the five dedicated spaces

  • l'univers aquatique (the swimming zones): the core swimming facility features an olympic-sized 25-meter fitness pool designed for lap swimming and competitive training. separate from the lap lanes, there is a fun family leisure pool (bassin ludique) equipped with a 20-meter water slide, water jets, and a dedicated wading pool (pataugeoire) with specialized shallow depths (0 to 20 cm) for infants and toddlers.

  • l'espace plongée (the diving abyss): the most famous architectural masterpiece of the complex is its 20-meter deep indoor diving pit (fosse de plongée). semi-submerged and engineered with three separate depth tiers (1m, 3.5m, and 6m), it allows divers to train or take introductory scuba and free-diving (apnée) courses. the tower is fully visible from the street outside through a massive, towering glass window facade.

  • l'espace bien-être (the wellness spa): a calm, adults-only relaxation zone designed for recovery. it features a spacious 120m² thermal balneo-therapy pool, two traditional saunas, a steam room (hammam), a large hot tub (jacuzzi), an indoor relaxation lounge, and a quiet outdoor zen garden.

  • l'espace forme (the fitness center): located completely on the upper level of the facility, this serves as an independent premium gym. it houses a vast cardio and strength training floor, a dedicated indoor cycling studio (studio rpm), and a group class arena featuring standard pilates alongside intense les mills workout programs.

  • l'atelier de nungesser (the restaurant): an on-site restaurant and social lounge providing healthy post-workout meals, casual snacks, coffee, and drinks overlooking the pool activities.
