Le Caillou Qui Bique
le caillou-qui-bique
ancient geological wonders, local legends, & woodland trails
located deep within the lush woods of angre and roisin (honnelles) in belgium, just a quick drive over the border from quiévrechain, le caillou-qui-bique is one of the most famous natural monuments and tourist landmarks in the hauts-pays region.
the site takes its unique name from the local patois: a stone "bique" when it juts out over an edge or rests in a delicate, seemingly unstable balance. wrapped in centuries of folklore, this stunning destination is a favorite for nature lovers, families, and hikers.
what to see & do
the 370-million-year-old rock: the primary attraction is a massive, 25-meter-high geological rock formation made of ancient puddingstone (a type of hard, sedimentary conglomerate rock). raw and towering over the edge of the grande honnelle river, the rock features an eerie, rugged shape that strangely resembles a human profile when viewed from the correct angle.
the legend of satan: local folklore tells a story of satan trying to build a massive dam across the river valley to drown the neighboring abbey of saint-ghislain. caught by the morning light before he could finish, the devil threw the massive rock down in defeat, leaving it to "bique" on the riverbank forever.
woodland walking loops: the surrounding bois d'angre is legendary for its pristine environment. an incredibly popular 6.5-kilometer loop trail departs directly from the nearby village square in angreau, taking hikers across footbridges, through quiet meadows, and directly past the monument. the woods are particularly famous in early spring, when millions of wild yellow jonquils bloom and carpet the forest floor.
the emile verhaeren museum: the site shares a deep connection with literature. the famous belgian symbolist poet emile verhaeren lived and worked in a quiet house right near the woods here, using the serene landscape as an artistic retreat. a small museum space stands dedicated to his memory and legacy right beside the forest trails.
le chalet du garde (bistro): nestled right inside the woods near the rock formation, this iconic local tavern is the perfect post-hike rest stop. walkers can pull up a seat to enjoy artisanal quiches, classic croque-monsieurs, and an extensive selection of local belgian craft beers.
