Chateau et Parc Desandrouin
Ancien Siège de la Régie des Mines
The grand corporate palace on the Anzin-Valenciennes border
Located on Avenue Desandrouin, directly where Valenciennes meets the municipal border of Anzin, the Château Desandrouin is a majestic architectural monument to the industrial expansion of northern France. Constructed by the wealthy aristocratic shareholders of the Compagnie des Mines d'Anzin, this imposing "château d'industrie" was designed as a soaring, physical statement of corporate dominance, serving for generations as the administrative headquarters (La Régie) of the largest mining empire in the country. Today, the estate is highly valued as a protected, inscribed asset of the UNESCO World Heritage Mining Basin.
History & Architectural Grandeur
The castle bears the name of the Desandrouin family, the pioneering industrial glassmakers and aristocrats who originally discovered the region's massive underground coal veins in the early 18th century.
The Power Structure: Unlike classical rural nobility estates, this urban palace was explicitly built in the 19th century to centralize the corporate executive offices, engineering brains, and financial wealth of the mining company.
The Architecture: The facade features a stately, commanding neoclassical design language. Built with premium materials to contrast sharply with the modest brick miners' cottages (corons) nearby, its symmetrical design, heavy stone frontons, and tall windows look out directly over an exclusive private green domain.
The Modern Transformation into a Music Hub
Rather than allowing this symbol of industrial capitalism to slide into historical decay following the cessation of regional mining, the community creatively repurposed its grand interior halls.
For many years, the building famously served as the creative home for the Campus des Musiques Actuelles (CMA), functioning as a premier regional contemporary music school, recording studio facility, and artist residency space. While the CMA has since shifted its primary educational campus to a specialized contemporary structure directly adjacent to the Théâtre d'Anzin, the legendary château remains tightly woven into the region's cultural and sonic identity.
