Théatre d’Anzin

The Théâtre d'Anzin

An Art Deco gem, regional performing arts showcase, and monument to local history

Located in the town of Anzin, just a few minutes north of central Valenciennes, the Théâtre d'Anzin (also known as the Théâtre Communautaire d'Anzin) is a major cultural pillar of the Valenciennes Métropole. Inaugurated in 1934, it is celebrated as one of the few standing heritage theaters in northern France that has completely retained its classic, pre-war regional character. With a seating capacity of around 1,165 people, it acts as a grand community venue for popular theater, comedy showcases, music variety acts, and dance.

The Architecture & Artistic Legacy

Designed in 1932 by the accomplished architect Joseph Foyer, the building is officially classified as an exceptional example of interwar Art Deco civic architecture.

  • The Facade: The exterior architecture features a clean, symmetrical design consisting of balanced wings with decorative balusters, elegant triptych window bays, and grand entry doors adorned with the regional coat of arms under a large semi-circular transom.

  • The Lucien Jonas Paintings: The interior holds immense artistic value. Celebrated local artist Lucien Jonas—a native of Anzin who achieved great national acclaim—personally adorned the great hall and the main auditorium with spectacular, sprawling frescoes. These intricate murals beautifully capture allegorical representations of the performing arts and the proud history of the local mining community.

Important Renovation & Programming Update

The Théâtre d'Anzin is currently undergoing a massive, comprehensive structural modernization and heritage restoration project managed by Valenciennes Métropole. The extensive works are focused on entirely restoring the historic Art Deco interiors, upgrading technical backstage infrastructure, and improving audience accessibility standards.

Visitor Alert: The physical theater building on Avenue Anatole France is temporarily closed to the public for the duration of these major renovations. However, the theater actively keeps its vibrant seasonal programming alive by hosting its scheduled comedy shows, plays, and concerts across a network of local partner venues—including the Cité des Congrès de Valenciennes in Anzin and Le Phénix in Valenciennes.

Location & Practical Info
