Musée Henri Matisse
The Musée Départemental Henri Matisse
The master’s personal legacy, avant-garde movements, & a grand Baroque palace
Located in Le Cateau-Cambrésis, roughly forty-five minutes south of Valenciennes, the Musée Départemental Henri Matisse holds a unique place in art history: it is the only museum established by Henri Matisse himself in his own birthplace. Founded in 1952, just two years before his passing, Matisse personally gifted the initial collection to his hometown citizens and directed exactly how the works should be arranged.
The museum is housed inside the magnificent Palais Fénelon, an 18th-century Baroque palace that once served as the summer residence for the Archbishops of Cambrai. Surrounded by a classic French park designed by the legendary André Le Nôtre, the institution stands as one of the most vital modern art hubs in northern France.
A Look at the Expansive Collections
Following a massive structural expansion project that added over 1,000 square meters of exhibition space, the museum offers a deeply comprehensive look into early 20th-century modernism across three core pillars:
The Henri Matisse Collection
This collection traces the entire creative arc of Matisse’s life, from his classical training to his explosive Fauvist experiments and late-career innovations. The permanent collection features over 700 individual works and items, including:
Iconic Paintings: Masterpieces like Femme à la gandoura bleue (1951) and Intérieur aux barres de soleil(1942).
The Mediums: Dedicated technical galleries highlighting Matisse’s masterful range across sculpture (such as the Jeannette bronze series), fine-art engraving, and charcoal drawing.
The Paper Cutouts (Papiers Découpés): Large-scale graphic displays showcasing his famous late-life cutout techniques, featuring works like Tahiti II and the Océanie series.
The Auguste Herbin Collection
The museum holds a magnificent parallel collection dedicated to Auguste Herbin, a pioneer of geometric abstraction who was born in the nearby village of Quiévy, Nord. This section includes colorful geometric canvases, painted wood sculptures, and monumental works tracking his major influence on the abstract avant-garde movement.
The Tériade Collection
This extraordinary donation comprises the personal archives of the legendary art publisher Tériade. It features over 500 graphic plates, engravings, and rare artist books (livres d'artistes) created through collaborations with the greatest creative minds of the era, including Marc Chagall, Joan Miró, Fernand Léger, and Pablo Picasso.
